I won a t-shirt over at Shoemoney a couple days ago, and everyone that wins a t-shirt (1 each day) gets an entry into the monthly draw of a grand price. This month Shoemoney are going to give away two MacBooks. One of them being an Air.

So, I have to fight against 28 other people, giving me a almost 3.5% chance to win. Shoemoney didn’t say if one winner takes both laptops, or if there will be two winners, but I guess there will be two, and that gives me a little better percent, but it’s still a long shot. But, I wouldn’t mind a new laptop. Which one would you have picked, the MacBook Air or the White Macbook?

I’m not going to write a big post about this, but go and checkmout the cool timeline that they have created.

To start with, Larry and Sergey (the founders) was calling their search engine BackRub, but they decided it needed a new name. 15. september 1998 they registered the domain Google.com.

Larry and Sergey decide that the BackRub search engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming, they go with Google – a play on the word “googol,” a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The use of the term reflects their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.

If we take a look at the Google homepage back in 1998 it looks kinda similar to todays version. heh.

In my daily internet use, I do use a lot of Google products. What product from Google exept the search and gmail do you use, and like the most?

So, If you have been with me on this blog since the begining you all now it all started so well, but then in February/March it went downhill. I did not have enough time to write, and with less and less updates, the amount of visitors went down. But, I never gave up on the blog, and I haven’t yet either.

In todays post I thought I should share some love to the few people actually commented on my blog this month.

Top commentators

Chetan (3)

Hugo Santos (1)

Kathy Mead (1)

purposeinc (1)

Check out their blogs.

Where are we now

So, you might wonder where this blog is now. Well, after a quick look in analytics I can report that It has been getting a steady 600-700 visits per month. It’s nothing to brag about, I know, but then again, I haven’t done anything to promote the blog, except writing a post or two each month.

RSS are going great

There are actually 83 people subscribed to the RSS feed, still with no updates. This tells me that there are actually someone out there that would like to read what i write. This is a big motivator, and I would love to break the 100 mark before Christmas. Help me achieve that, and subscribe to the blog!

Some thoughts

July, this summer I wrote a post telling you that VikingBlogger where going to do a comeback, as you might have noticed this haven’t happened, yet. I still want to grow this blog into something big, but it’s really hard to use much time on something that doesn’t give any cash in the pocket.

Anyway, who are still reading this blog? Leave a comment, and tell me/the world what you are up to these days.

Taken from the Google blog: At Google, we have a saying: “launch early and iterate.” While this approach is usually limited to our engineers, it apparently applies to our mailroom as well! As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit “send” a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome….We will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries.

So, that means we will have a spanking new browser to check out tomorrow. As it looks like now the Google browser will be very lightweight out of the box, but you will probably have the choice of putting plugins in it, just like FF.

(Image from Shoemoney)

Everyone knows Google founds FF. I wounder if FF is on board with the making of Chrome, if they aren’t, I wonder if they like the thought about another browser in the market. What do you think?

Here you can read the comic that Google have published:

Today Wordpress 2.6 got releaseed. There are several new feauters, but here are some highlighted ones:

Post Revisions: Wiki-like tracking of edits

AS you know wordpress got autosave by now. But in 2.6 you can check who made what changes just like in wikipedia. Guess this will be usefull on blogs with many writers.

Theme Previews: See it before your audience does

Finally you can make changes to a theme before you make them public. Much like writing a post you can now prview a theme.

Here are some of the smaller features and improvements in 2.6:

Word count! Never guess how many words are in your post anymore.

Image captions, so you can add sweet captions like Political Ticker does under your images.

Bulk management of plugins.

A completely revamped image control to allow for easier inserting, floating, and resizing. It’s now fully integrated with the WYSIWYG.

Drag-and-drop reordering of Galleries.

Plugin update notification bubble.

Customizable default avatars.

You can now upload media when in full-screen mode.

Remote publishing via XML-RPC and APP is now secure (off) by default, but you can turn it on easily through the options screen.

Full SSL support in the core, and the ability to force SSL for security.

You can now have many thousands of pages or categories with no interface issues.

Ability to move your
wp-config
file and
wp-content
directories to a custom location, for “clean” SVN checkouts.

Select a range of checkboxes with “shift-click.”

You can toggle between the Flash uploader and the classic one.

A number of proactive security enhancements, including cookies and database interactions.

Stronger better faster versions of TinyMCE, jQuery, and jQuery UI.

Version 2.6 fixes approximately 194 bugs.

Here is an video that tells you what new in 3 minutes and 29 seconds.

The guy over at 45n5.com have yet again tried to figure out the ongoing price for make money blogs. From his calculation each subscriber you got is now worth $18.42.

So, to get the value of you blog you simply do as follows:

#Number of subscribers * $18.42 = The value of your blog

You might think this is too simple, and well, it is. But still, it’s an ok metode to figure out the value of make money blogs.

Where did he get the numbers from?

He basically checks every website selling sites out there, and if a make money blog are for sale, he watches it, and checks what the sale price is. The last month only 4 make money blogs have been sold, and they are as follows:

(image from 45n5.com)

As a note to the image above I can tell you that johncow.com are’t sold because the buyer wasen’t real. He basically flipped around after he won the auction and asked the owner of johncow.com to sell it to him for $35k instead. Something the owner of course didn’t want to. So a long story short, the blog haven’t been sold. Yet.

This makes the avrage price per subscriber a lot less, and without the sale of johncow.com the avreage value of an subscriber is $14.14.

So, would i sell this blog for $1.5k? I would actually have had to think about it, since I got so much to do, but probably I wouldent. The amount of time I have used on it, and the amount of money. I think we are up to $700+ only in advertising. $1.5k would just not covered it, and since I’m not in the need of quick money it wouldn’t have been a smart move of me.

How much is your blog worth?

This post is brought to you from VikingBlogger.com

VikingBlogger is worth $1492.02!

So, the 2.5.1 does include some important bug fixes, and a security fix. They recommend everyone to update immediately, particularly if your blog has open registration. The vulnerability is not public but it will be shortly.

Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.

Better performance for those who have many categories

Media Uploader fixes

An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7

Widget Administration fixes

Various usability improvements

Layout fixes for IE

So, then I finally pushed the button, and the blog is now 2.5. I have actually updated a couple minor blogs that I run, so I’m already fairly familiar with the new admin interface, and I must say, I’m impressed!

Anyway, this post wasn’t meant for just a “Hey, I have upgraded the blog”- post. The metode I use to update the blog is actually a little gem, that I don’t think all knows about. It literary took me 1 min to do the update, and It only required 1 click.

I am using a plugin called Wordpress Automatic upgrade. This plugin makes the whole upgrading thing like a dream, the only thing you need to do is push the button, and the plugin handles everything else.

The plugin does the following:

Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.

Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.

Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.

Puts the site in maintenance mode.

De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.

Upgrades wordpress files.

Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.

Re-activates the plugins.

And it’s all automatic, you can make yourself a sandwich with beef and tomato in the mean while. Well, you can’t, because the upgrade will be over before you can say “Honey, make me a….”

When it comes to the last point it diden’t do that for me, but thats no biggie. I used maybe 30 sec to reactivate all the plugins I use, and it looks like the blog are running fine now.

Enjoy!
