I Have Upgraded the Blog - With One Click!
So, then I finally pushed the button, and the blog is now 2.5. I have actually updated a couple minor blogs that I run, so I’m already fairly familiar with the new admin interface, and I must say, I’m impressed!
Anyway, this post wasn’t meant for just a “Hey, I have upgraded the blog”- post. The metode I use to update the blog is actually a little gem, that I don’t think all knows about. It literary took me 1 min to do the update, and It only required 1 click.
I am using a plugin called Wordpress Automatic upgrade. This plugin makes the whole upgrading thing like a dream, the only thing you need to do is push the button, and the plugin handles everything else.
The plugin does the following:
- Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
- Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
- Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
- Puts the site in maintenance mode.
- De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
- Upgrades wordpress files.
- Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
- Re-activates the plugins.
And it’s all automatic, you can make yourself a sandwich with beef and tomato in the mean while. Well, you can’t, because the upgrade will be over before you can say “Honey, make me a….”
When it comes to the last point it diden’t do that for me, but thats no biggie. I used maybe 30 sec to reactivate all the plugins I use, and it looks like the blog are running fine now.
Enjoy!

This is a great plugin and one that i use. Makes upgrading as easy as 1-2-3
Or you can do as me; buy a hosting plan of DreamHost. Log on the user panel -> Click upgrade wordpress -> Wait 5 - 10 minutes.
Hey Staale, your web hosting does not do the wordpress upgrade for you? I have upgraded wordpress to 2.3 last time through my web hosting service and did not use any plugin. What difference you see if any?
I have read that this plugin has issues sometimes
so before using it, always do a manual backup
Fitness Site: Everything can have issues. I have now upgraded this blog three times with this plugin, and havent had any issues. The plugin does actually backup the files, so you can download them if you want.
Just downloaded and installed that plugin to handle my future WP upgrades
If you have to reactivate the plugins, it’s much more easy to just ftp the new version I would say…
But then again, I haven’t timed it.
It depends on how many plugins you got! And to ftp the new version is only one click for me…..
