The Upcoming Digg Effect

digg-visits-statAs you might have noticed I posted a post couple days ago called “10 Most Sexy Commercials“. Hopefully Probably some of you thought that it was just a stupid link bait. And your totally right - it was.

I got the idea from a Norwegian news-site, where they listed some of the sexy commercials that have been on the TV. I thought instantly that that would be a great theme to make a “top 10″ list of, and as most of you know, digg users love “top 10″ lists!

Anyway, the post where fairly easy to make. I went to Youtube and searched for “sexy commercials”. Then I picked the ones with high numbers of views, and of course those I thought where good. Then I just put them in the order I thought they should be, and embedded the videos on the post itself. This way the reader didn’t have to leave the site to watch the videos.

When the post is all done, the actually work starts. How to get the snowball rolling? Well, its simple, I got 20 or so users digging it within a couple of hours then the video shows up on the upcoming list (on page 8 or 9 to start with) Then the article got 1-5 diggs per hour and it climbed the upcoming list pretty well, until I got 78 diggs and where on top on page 2. Then suddenly they pulled the plug for my article, and it was no where to be found. Not sure what happen though.

The good thing about this is that I got some nice amount of traffic from digg without crashing my server. If I would have hit front page I know for sure the server would have broken down and me kicked out.

This traffic is from now called “The Upcomming Digg Effect”.

As you can see the traffic aren’t that good, but the fact that somebody actually clicked to get on a new page is good. Remember, its free traffic. :)

On the above image you can clearly see that the further up on the upcoming page the article got, the more traffic it received. It’s really annoying that it got the plug pulled out just before the last page.

So, what did this traffic mean to me?
Well - to tell the truth I don’t think It meant a thing. Got one extra comment, and most probably my alexa number will be nice on the next update. Other then that, nothing. I don’t have any ads on the site, as as far as I can judge I did not get any new subscribers.

  1. It sounds like you are on autobury on digg. The autobury script works that way. Just before you hit the first page, they will nuke you off. I don’t see the reason why this domain should be on autobury though.
Try to install the domain mirror plugin and submit youre article from a different domain, that should let you know if you are on autobury.

  2. Lol I’ll tell you what you got; you got a higher unique visitor count for the month and a higher bounce rate :D.

Either way pretty cool thanks for sharing.

  3. Interesting, but the real test is does anyone stay around to here more. It would be interesting to see your return visitors off that traffic… not just the ones that checked other stuff out.

  4. I guess that was the only digg traffic this site will get. Tried to submit this article, and got the following message:

“This URL has been widely reported by users as being regularly used to spam Digg’s submission process and cannot be submitted at this time.”

Anyone know if this is something that goes away with time?

  5. Personally never seen it but the question is; did you get banned BEFORE, DURING or AFTER this post? :D

  6. Good question - my guess is before. Since my article got buried before. The thing is, my account are not banned, just the url. So I guess I can submit other stories with different urls. I can at least digg other stories etc.
  7. Unfortunately you can’t be dugg but seriously who cares about digg i’d stick to more blog infested areas.

  8. I happen to like stumble upon better than Digg. The bouncerate I got was 40% only . :)

  9. I went on the front page of Digg twice with Tech In Demand, and a couple more times when I was writing for Mashable.

The impacts of it all were minimal. Thankfully, my web server didn’t crash.

It was just a heavy spike in traffic for the next week, which continually dissipated. Maybe only 10 subscribers out of 16,000 visitors.

Of course, I was stupid and did not have an RSS button placed in the optimal place where people could click it.

Oh well, it is organic traffic for the win.

  10. Digg is pretty much a waste anyways.

Where is the article on digg? I couldnt find it anywhere

  11. Read my first post again staale.
If the domain is banned, or put on autobury you can install a plugin to the blog called domain mirroring. That way you can submit through another domain, but the visitors will still come to this blog.

Was this youre first post submitted to digg?
If so, it was strange you got banned right away.

  12. Right. But how does google think about that? Will it be counted as duplicated? Tempting thought. :)

It was kinda my first submit, I have had a few other stories, but did not work with them, so only a couple diggs on each.

  13. Matthew: Its here: digg.com/television/10_Most_Sexy_Commercials
  14. I wouldn’t worry to much about google regarding the dupes, as long as you are selling links, banners and posts at youre blog :P

  15. Hehe, true. :)
